  • UN team to look into tie-up in two sectors

    Aug 10th, 2018

United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Indian head Rene Van Berkel and UN Women programme coordinator Suhela Khan visited Kollam on Friday to check the possibilities of collaboration with the State in cashew and fisheries sectors. The UN team, which arrived in Kerala accepting the invitation of Fisheries Minister J. Mercykutty Amma, will visit various centres in the State.

The team spent some time at the Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation’s factory at Ayathil and inspected various products, including cashew soup. They interacted with the labourers and visited the shelling, peeling, and grading units. A meeting was held at the Kollam guest house to discuss the developmental projects submitted for UN collaboration. Import of raw cashew nut, exchange of cashew farming technology, renovation of cashew factories, modernisation of fish markets and marketing of value-added products in the fishing sector were discussed.

Mr. Berkel said further steps would be taken after receiving a project report from the government. “A detailed report of a project ensuring jobs to those working in fishing and cashew sectors will be submitted to the UN,” the Minister said.
